Dr. Edward Allred, 80, the owner of Los Alamitos Race Course and the majority landowner of the property, said he has no immediate plans to close the track but with the declining state of horse racing doubts anyone after him will keep jockeys atop circling thoroughbreds and quarter horses here.
What should become of the track’s 155-plus acres of prime real estate should the sporting venue go away is a brewing controversy.
“It doesn’t make any sense for any track, Santa Anita, Los Alamitos, Hollywood Park ... to be there in light of property values,” said Allred beneath the grandstands in a conference room. “We’d like to do what we’re doing, and so I’m going to continue doing that as long as I can. ... It’s unlikely to find a successor who can do the same thing.”

For the eighth consecutive season, Long Beach State had the most former players in Major League Baseball of any other college or university. However, the 13 Dirtbags in the MLB experienced mixed results this year.
Dirtbag pitching legend Jered Weaver and the Los Angeles Angles had one of their worst seasons in years. While the Angles wallow in last place in the American League West, Weaver’s ERA of 5.17 is by far the highest of his career, and his 12 losses match a career high.
This statistical drop off was a long time coming as Weaver, 33, struggled with arm injuries and a resulting loss of velocity. However, the veteran right-hander has found success by becoming more of a location pitcher. Last Friday, Weaver delivered his second consecutive quality start, third in his last four outings, in a loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. LOS ANGELES — The weight of five stars can be heavy. UCLA freshman linebacker Mique Juarez has leaed that the hard way.
Just a few days into fall camp, the former five-star recruit stopped showing up on the practice field while head coach Jim Mora explained his absence only as “excused.” Juarez has missed nearly six weeks of practice and three games as the Bruins prepare for their Pac-12 opener at 5 p.m. Saturday against Stanford, but he said he does intend to retu to the team in the future.
“It was just too much pressure,” Juarez told the Southe Califoia News Group.
Juarez said Mora set him up with a psychiatrist, who is helping him handle the stressful situation. Juarez said he will attend classes when fall quarter instruction starts Thursday after he completed spring quarter as an early enrollee.

LOS ANGELES — Theo Howard can’t help he’s been afflicted. The good news for the UCLA freshman is his ailment is curable.
“They say youth is a disease and the only cure is experience,” receivers coach Eric Yarber said of Howard, who has only one catch in three games. “He’s going to gradually get the experience that he needs, I can’t just throw him out there to the wolves and not let him have success, because I want him to have success and confidence.”
Howard was a heavily recruited receiver with high expectations coming out of Westlake High. Senior receiver Keeth Walker III said he expected Howard to emerge as a top receiver this year.
Yet the freshman didn’t get on the field during UCLA’s season opener and caught only one pass the next week against UNLV for 15 yards.

LOS ANGELES — Utah coach Kyle Whittingham caught the news like everyone else Monday.
USC had picked a new starting quarterback. Redshirt freshman Sam Daold was in. Redshirt junior Max Browne was out.
It seemed possible the Trojans’ abrupt shakeup could alter the Utes’ prep for the teams’ game Friday night in Salt Lake City.
But Whittingham shot down the idea Tuesday.
“He’s got two quarterbacks who are pretty da talented and fairly similar,” Whittingham said. “They’re not complete polar opposites as far as their skill sets. It wasn’t, in our estimation, any impact on our game plaing.”
One reason is USC has played Daold in its first three games, even as Browne started and saw the majority of the snaps.
Whittingham estimated Daold was behind center for about 50 snaps.
After reviewing game film, he said the offense looked similar, no matter who was at quarterback.

USC’s season is three games old but the fans are irate after blowout losses to Alabama and Stanford.
Even worse, four of the past six losses were by at least 17 points, which last happened in 1983. Something must be done to stop the current slide, but so far the program has demonstrated a resistance to quick solutions even as morale sinks.
“The mood right now? It (stinks),” USC quarterback Sam Daold said. “We don’t want to lose.”
Can anything change at the glacial pace things move right now?
USC’s offensive line committed five false-start penalties against Stanford because players said a Cardinal lineman was mimicking quarterback Max Browne’s signals.
But why did USC wait until halftime to switch to visual signals? That adjustment could be made during a timeout. Instead, the Trojans hindered first-half drives with constant penalties.
“At times we were just stabbing ourselves in the foot,” Browne said.

LOS ANGELES — Christian McCaffrey needs no introduction. The Stanford ruing back is the golden-haired golden boy of the Pac-12, but UCLA head coach Jim Mora said his star power should not be limited to just the West Coast.
“In my opinion, it’s not even arguable that he’s the top player in college football,” Mora said Monday as the Bruins prepare to face McCaffrey and Stanford at 5 p.m. Saturday at the Rose Bowl.
McCaffrey’s cardinal-and-white No. 5 jersey will dominate UCLA’s focus as the team tries to contain the do-it-all Stanford superstar who leads the conference in rushing and all-purpose yards with 149 and 235 yards per game, respectively.

LOS ANGELES >> There were flames and smoke and daylight fireworks, the big homecoming dressed up entirely too well Sunday for something that would implode into rubble.
Oh, the Rams won, 9-3, beating Seattle in a football game decided by actual feet, the kicker-infested victory coming in their first regular-season game in Southe Califoia since 1994.
But the homecoming king? He lost, Pete Carroll watching helplessly from the sideline as his Seahawks did what his USC teams rarely did in the Coliseum - lose and in a way more offensive than OFFensive.

LOS ANGELES >> On Sunday afteoon, Troy Hill smiled and pointed into the stands at the Coliseum, where just over a dozen of his friends and family sat.
Once an all-conference coerback at Oregon, the 25-year-old has bounced around the league since going undrafted in 2015. The Cinciati Bengals signed him, waived him, signed him to their practice squad, and waived him again. Last Christmas, the New England Patriots signed him, then waived him five days later.
That was when the Rams bit, claiming him off waivers on Dec. 30 — giving him the chance to climb up to depth chart this summer, and eventually ea first-string reps in a 9-3 win over the Seahawks.
Asked to reflect on his jouey after the game, Hill sat by his locker and said, “Damn. Long way.”

LOS ANGELES >> The irony is Alec Ogletree was hopelessly out of position mere seconds before making the play that may have saved the Rams season.
The game-saving tackle. The heads up fumble recovery. The delirious eruption from more than 90,000 at the Coliseum that blew the roof off Los Angeles and, finally, Ogletree’s sprint to his mom and dad to proudly present them with the football he scooped up was agonizingly close to never happening.
That it did means Ogletree is etched in Los Angeles Rams lore forever. And it’s a place he’ll cherish forever.
“It was an amazing feeling being out there today,” he said. “It was a historical day. And I was glad to be a part of it.”

PHOENIX >> If September Dave Roberts could time-travel and show February Dave Roberts some of the lineup cards he has been filling out, it might have given his younger self reason to worry what it meant that he was depending so much on rookies this late in the season.
“It probably would have,” the rookie manager said. “There were some games where you’d look at the lineups we’ve run out there in September and it kind of looks like a split-squad game, I think, if you look at it from the begiing of spring training.
“But these guys are major-league players playing on a playoff-contending team.”
In fact, three of them helped the Dodgers move a step closer to clinching that playoff spot with a 6-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks Saturday night.

PALO ALTO >> There is no shame in losing, but what do you do with a team and coaching staff that look lost?
No. 7-ranked Stanford defeated USC 27-10 on Saturday night. That outcome was expected but not with the level of disorganization and ridiculous decisions that personified the latest loss to the Cardinal.
USC coach Clay Helton is a wonderful man but does he have a game plan that includes wiing the game? His team played better last season and everyone said the Trojans were going to perform this season with so many starters back and a new coaching staff.
How far-fetched does that seem as USC caot even line up for a play without a false start?
Could you imagine USC manhandling UCLA like it did just before Helton got hired last year? Can you imagine USC (1-2, 0-1) manhandling anyone at this point?

ANAHEIM >> Ricky Nolasco is being tested now, and he’s passing.
Nolasco, who came to the Angels in a deal just before the trading deadline with a reputation as a back-end iings-eater, has lately proved he can be more than that.
And he’s done it against two of the more powerful lineups in baseball.
Nolasco tossed six scoreless iings in the Angels’ 6-1 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Saturday night, cutting his ERA to 2.25 in his last four starts.
In his previous outing, facing a Seattle Mariners team that has been surprisingly potent at the plate, Nolasco got into the seventh with only two runs on the board before the bullpen cracked behind him.

She ended Friday night’s game with a simple rim-run, from baseline to baseline, so she could finish a fast break, when her team led by only one point.
The Sparks beat San Antonio, 71-65, and ended the WNBA regular season with a 26-8 record. Coach Brian Agler was asked his choice for MVP of the league by people who already knew the answer was Nneka Ogwumike.
“First, she’s having a historic offensive season, the most efficient season in the history of the league,” Agler said. “Then you take the things I see with her leadership every day.

PHOENIX >> The way Justin Tuer views his impending free agency, he’s been unemployed before and he’ll be unemployed again.
Tuer was a non-tendered free agent when the New York Mets elected not to offer him a contract following the 2013 season. He was unsigned until February 2014 when the Dodgers gave him a one-year, $1 million contract.
Circumstances have changed considerably as Tuer approaches free agency this fall. He leads the Dodgers in RBIs and has set career-bests in games played, runs scored, hits, doubles, home runs, walks and RBIs.
Tuer could head onto the open market this time as one of the best offensive players available.
“Yeah. But technically when the season ends I’ll be unemployed. I won’t have a job,” Tuer said. “Yeah, you go from being a role player as a free agent to being someone who plays every day this year. That’ll be a little different.”

Rams safety T.J. McDonald has been charged with one count of driving under the influence of drugs, a decision tied to McDonald’s arrest in May in Woodland Hills.
The Los Angeles City Attoey’s Office aounced its decision to file charges Friday afteoon. McDonald has an Oct. 7 arraignment in Van Nuys and, if found guilty of the misdemeanor, could face a maximum penalty of six months in county jail and a $1,000 fine.
McDonald practiced Friday with the Rams. The City Attoey’s aouncement was made shortly after the end of practice, and McDonald was not reachable for comment. It was not immediately known whether McDonald will face any suspension from the Rams or the NFL.
The Rams play Seattle on Sunday in their home opener at the Coliseum, where McDonald played his college football home games for USC.

The first hometown NFL game at the Coliseum in more than two decades could have been an even more special occasion for Howie Long.
First, the former Los Angeles Raider Hall of Fame defensive end says he clearly remembers that “we won a Super Bowl in L.A., and the Rams didn’t,” so there’s that sense of pride.
But had the Rams not released 31-year-old defensive lineman Chris Long back in February, right after their move back to Southe Califoia got NFL approval, Howie Long would have been watching his son play in person in Week 2.

LOS ANGELES >> Although the UCLA offense has been inconsistent through its first two games, head coach Jim Mora gave first-year offensive coordinator Keedy Polamalu an “A-plus” for his play-calling.
Ahead of Saturday’s game against BYU at 7:15 p.m., Mora said he is impressed with Polamalu’s confidence and demeanor while calling plays for the first time in his 23-year coaching career. While the Bruins made the transition to a scheme during the offseason, the head coach praised Polamalu’s attention to detail and relentless preparation, which is now paying dividends during the season.
“He knows why he’s calling the plays that he’s calling and the players know why he’s calling the plays he’s calling, and that makes a big difference,” Mora said. “I’ve always thought that if the players had an idea why something was being called, they had a better chance of executing rather than just calls coming in out of the ears.”

Suspended USC linebacker Osa Masina has been charged with one count of first-degree rape and two counts of first-degree forcible sodomy, according to papers filed Thursday in district court in Salt Lake City.
Masina, 19, surrendered to police in Utah at 10:30 a.m. local time Thursday, according to his defense attoey, Greg Skordas, and was later booked into the Salt Lake County jail. Bail was set at $250,000.
The felony charges stemmed from an alleged sexual assault that occurred July 26 in Cottonwood Heights, Utah, a suburb of Salt Lake City, according to details from a search warrant and affidavit obtained by the Southe Califoia News Group.
USC barred Masina from all football-related activities this week.
A 19-year-old woman told authorities she was assaulted by Masina after she had consumed alcohol and cookies laced with marijuana at a house party.
After falling asleep on one of the couches in the basement of the house, she said she awoke to Masina raping her.

Out of pro wrestling’s scripted ring, his first trip into the octagon didn’t last long.
Punk, who was one of WWE’s biggest stars when he left it two years ago to try his hand in ultimate fighting, tapped out just 2:14 into the first round after he was pummeled and choked by Mickey Gall on the UFC 203 undercard Saturday night.
The 38-year-old Punk was on his back less than 10 seconds into the fight. Pied up against the octagon’s cage, he was unable to get out from under Gall, who landed numerous blows to both sides of Punk’s head.

RICHMOND, Va. >> It was yet another Dey Hamlin runaway for Joe Gibbs Racing on Saturday night in what tued out to be an anticlimactic end to NASCAR’s regular season.
The fireworks came off the track at Richmond Inteational Raceway, where Tony Stewart intentionally wrecked Ryan Newman before Newman angrily chided his former boss for the accident that officially ended Newman’s chances to make the playoffs.
The verbal beat down from Newman came with 37 laps left, before Hamlin finished off his third career Sprint Cup win at his home track while giving JGR its third consecutive victory at the track and ninth in the last 15 races.
Newman called Stewart “bipolar,” said the retiring race car driver had anger issues, and all but outright referenced the 2014 incident in which Stewart fatally struck a sprint car driver.

PASADENA >> Old offenses die hard for the UCLA football team.
After spending the offseason preaching physicality in a power-ruing offense, the Bruins resurrected shades of their old spread offense to tally their first win of the season, a 42-21 victory over UNLV on Saturday at the Rose Bowl.
Through three quarters, UCLA threw the ball 57.1 percent of the time against UNLV. By the end of the game, 15 different receivers had at least one reception. Although the new offense was expected to put quarterback Josh Rosen under center more, he took 13 of the team’s first 14 snaps from the shotgun after the Bruins mounted their 15-point comeback against Texas A&M last week while operating out of the shotgun.

Junior ruing back Al Fisher paced a powerful ruing game that carried visiting Paramount to a 28-6 victory Friday night over Jordan.
Fisher rushed for a game-high 121 yards on 18 carries. He scored a pair of touchdowns.
Pierre Robinson Jr., had a 30-yard run in the fourth quarter that was the longest of the game for Paramount.
Robinson retued the game’s opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown. It was the second time in three weeks that the Jordan special teams unit allowed a touchdown on the opening kickoff.
Paramount stretched the lead to 13-0 with a 10-play, 60-yard drive that featured only one pass completion. Fisher plowed into the end zone from the 1-yard line.
Fisher’s second touchdown of the first half, a 5-yard run, gave the Pirates a 21-0 halftime lead.

ANAHEIM >> Tyler Skaggs didn’t have much to work with Friday at Angel Stadium. The Angels’ bullpen couldn’t sustain his excellence in the late iings and their hitters couldn’t provide much help, either, against Texas Rangers starter Yu Darvish.
Adrian Beltre’s one-out solo homer off reliever J.C. Ramirez broke a 1-all tie in the eighth iing and propelled the Rangers to a 2-1 victory over the Angels in front of 42,139, who were treated to an old-fashioned pitchers’ duel between the left-handed Skaggs and Darvish, a righty.
Skaggs couldn’t match Darvish’s efficiency through six iings, but that was more because Darvish was so good, so sharp with his pitches. Skaggs had a couple of messy iings, but kept the Rangers from landing a knockout blow until yielding to reliever Mike Morin to start the seventh.

ANAHEIM — Anaheim Mayor Tom Tait’s opposition to extending a host city contract with USA Volleyball could result in the Olympic medal-wiing U.S. national men’s and women’s teams leaving their home training base for the past decade, the Orange County Register has leaed.
USA Volleyball chairman Lori Okimura said, without the city’s renewal of an agreement that expires Dec. 31, the sport’s national goveing body would not only likely move the national teams out of Anaheim but the city would definitely lose the lucrative 2020 USA Volleyball Open touament at the Anaheim Convention Center as well as dozens of other volleyball events, costing the city millions of dollars in hotel and tourism revenues.
“We’re confident we’d find an alteate plan,” Okimura said.
